Marx, Foucault, Habermas

Marx- linear pattern of progress that traces a coherent movement through various modes of production.

Foucault: (postmodernism)critique of power knowledge and discipline a cyclical pattern of successive forms of power and violence that lead to greater forms of domination. Positing an individualist ideal of a person free of all social norms and the aesthetic transformation of the self

Frankfurt School - Critique of instrumental reason (hegemony of instrumental rationality)

Habermas: Suggests we need an expanded reason (Communicative Rationality/Discourse)(c.f Derrida), he critiques Marxism and Postmodern theory. Normative foundations without conventional foundationalism : eg a reason that does not simple accept positivism, an intersubjective reason concerned with the process of communication
