Quotes

"Dialogue is mutual search for a new reality, not debate to win with stronger arguments. In a dialogue propositions are pointers toward a common new reality; not against each other to win a verbal battle, but complementing each other in an effort to accommodate legitimate goals of all parties, inspired by theories and values, and constructive-creative-concrete enough to become a causa finalis". Galtuung

"I use the concept of affect as away of talking about a margin of manouverability, the 'where we might be able to go' and 'what we might be able to do' in every present situation. I guess 'affect' is a word I use for 'hope': Massumi

"A discourse is a system of words, actions, rules, beliefs, and institutions that share common values. Particular discourses sustain particular worldviews. We might even think of a discourse as a worldview in action. Discourses tend to be invisible--taken for granted as part of the fabric of reality."Fairclough

Emergence is “the principle that entities exhibit properties which are meaningful only when attributed to the whole, not to its parts.” Checkland

"What the designer cares about is whether the user perceives that some action is possible (or in the case of perceived non-affordances, not possible)." Norman

'Emergence' ( Bertalanffy, L. Cilliers, P ,), Constructivism and Social Construction

Exclusive Inclusion? The academic institutional and commercial/'public' framing of /(discourse around) 'emergence' (Vickers/Cilliers/Urry) and methods of accessing it such as for example   the Random Journey* (e.g. c.f Derive)

Is there a cultural stereotype  that is a reflection of/hangover from Racial Stereotyping?

The definition of emergence (from living general systems theory) points to the 'difference' between our natural context and the  designed conceptual/symbolic systems of narrative and environment)

> The focus on the expressive/affective terms  in "Random Expressive Flow" (or the interpretation thereof) ,can perhaps provoke an emotive  response related  the academic bias towards the cognitive, a focus on more passive  "appreciative space (c.f Vickers 1996) for emergent field effects (Massumi)" may be more open to subtlety of construction. The method of language/frame analysis (Eg critical discourse analysis (Fairclough) and its distinciton from/relation to the topic should be made clearer perhaps...

The closure/opening of appreciative judgement(Vickers) and how it relates to Ideology/ Hegemony is central...
It's interesting that the careful listening that is central to qualitative research is at the heart of this but not  just  listening  to the dominant group discourse...of course... staying away from the group has made me consider why some of the seeming tension was there, the Random Expressive Flow could be seen as a block to  listening and a source of a controlling insensitive discourse... but that  was not the whole story meant by  the term "Random Expressive Flow" perhaps I did not play the role of  a good /balanced advocate of such a concept in the group,  if so I regret that... but I also felt my subject position within the group being pushed? flowing into an 'oppositional space' at certain times... that position in the group "constellation"  is a product of what?

*(Random Journey is a journey driven by random decisions, also can be applied as a metaphor to reading style  etc )

The understanding between the Technical and the Creative realms is what interests me..

Access to Emergent phenomena concerns me.
Space for the exploration of randomness (experimentation with random expression and movement)

Explaining emergence in language can be complex, it occurs perhaps best by example, for me  its always in inclusive situations when I notice that subliminally I had been excluding a "section" or aspect of the environment (inner and outer), judging it as irrelevant or not good enough  when i start to accept it (perhaps for its potential) there appears to be a shift or movement in the system, the whole thing seems to evolve in a positive direction- that's what it means to me...

This relates to Affect (Massumi)

Do our language systems and use of language filter out/distract us from exploring the value of emergent phenomena? can our language use/discourse enable access to such experimental space.

Post structural openness, implies the potential of inherent/ubiquitous quality c.f entropy or negative comparative quality  (2nd Order Quality (Cybernetics)).

Eg
Random Journeying
Layered Textured Surfaces : Forest canopy, clouds
Noise: Background "Noise"
"Random" flows, C.f Drawing machines (Martin)

Emergent phenomena are properties of Whole systems so Inclusion is important.

In a post structural context

Intent to create  imposes  an assumed construct on the potential space of presence. (eg the canvas)
How can we explore the inherent value of noise/nature before imposing a form &  denying present  value by comparison

What is emergent/inherent value/quality ? (of canvas/field/space)

Can there be a valid measure of inherent/emergent value?

Background  texture?

If we have a production bias we are reconstructing the present as not enought
Can we construct the present in a way that allow is full optimal potential to unfold?

I am interested in emegence of value from "background noise"

(there is a concern with inclusivity)

Measuring students linguistic constructs regarding this...

(this is a change from the expressive )

I am concerned with systems that facilitate the exploration of human creative potential as stated in my Learning Plan.  (Add link)

My original MA Project focus was a design for a social poetic game,   'Poeisis' similar in some ways to the japanese social poetry of Renga ,  a balance of form, via syllable count, and randomness from the  dealing of word cards.

I grew interested in the context of creativity, in particular, individuals constructs of random flow.

'Creativity' exists in relation to it's dialectical partner 'Awareness' (Listening) . I am concerned with space for/attitudes towards space for emergent self-organisation)(Swimme) (poeisis (Whitehead), 'althea' (Heidigger).

I consider  a tri-polar context: Rationality, Awareness, Flow

I am interested in how the potential inclusive simplicity of creative flow can be subject to pressures to obscuration and how space to reclaim that can be realised... and how this is understood/constructed in various narratives/discourses

My intitial focus is on space for "Random Expressive Flow" (as a means of exploring inherent organisation) and the celebration of this in freeform expression.

Conceptual , Social, and Physical.

"Random Expressive Flow" :  Defn: allowance of a stream of expression (vocal/movement) without imposing  conceptual criticism,  (cf. Flow Csikzenmihalyi)

Conceptual (De Bono/Deleuze) -  Poetic/Intuitive (Poeisis/Heidegger)  - Improvisational/Performative(Swimme)
<------------------------------------------------Random Expressive Flow--------------------------------------------------->

Diagram 1 : As we move along from left to right  we move from the conceptual to the embodied.

Eg in regard to it's analogs:

Abstract Expressionism
Fluxus
Hawkins "Free Flow"
Derive
PataPhysics

Many seem like bottled water with added technical ingredients to create a commodity with it's required experts and containers and labels....

One option is the random walk, how this may  be framed in a certain way in certain discourses?
