I use the metaphor of Water as (1)Common source and (2)Bottled Commodity.


There are of course good  arguments for the value of either - but their priorities are very different and they can construe/value each other differently from their own positions 


Re Inclusivity/Exclusivity, Simplicity/Complexity, Safety/Danger, Value of Added ingredients


One  interest is in the relation between simplicity of access to creativity (commons)<> imposed complexity due to for example  the need to secure position in the institution (sell the commodity of knowledge)- 
As a person with a focus on information systems, an exploration of the accreditation and information systems, how the recording of information is biased could be an approach. ie Quantitative
Competitive judgement/accreditation. Categorisation
